They landed at the center of the Kaserne, on a black square stone that hovered separately from the rest of the building. Around the edges, there was an abyss that every Falkri learned to jump across when they first joined. It was just far enough that it took practice, and there had been many deaths in the past. The Syraphem had the advantage of their wings here, but in the ring they would weigh newer trainees down.

The slate was quiet today.

Kar took care to let go of Emryn quickly, knowing she didn’t like to be touched for long bouts, and started her running jump, clearing the abyss.

The wind played with her hair, and she breathed in the dampness that rose from between the rock curling itself around her. It smelled like the inside of a cave, of perpetual night, or waters that lingered on rock walls. Home. She smiled again and meant it this time, loving the cool caress. It was a memory, clearing the chasms for the first time. The elation she’d felt then had been hers and hers alone.

The square of halls that ran around the middle training ground was trimmed by columns and occasional doorways. Emryn and Kar walked through the one that led into the large, oval-shaped building to their right. The barracks and other common rooms populated the top floors and more training grounds spanned below. The structure was tall, but it was the underground that went far further. In the hotter months, the cool hallways offered a break from the warmth that seeped into the realm.

The center building had large padded floors, bordered by round mezzanines and was busy with Nephilim training.

When they entered, the air changed slightly. The few warriors that were battling on the mats didn’t miss a beat, and it was apparent who had been with the Falkri for a longer time. Because the recruits still bristled slightly when any of them walked by, especially Emryn. But it wasn’t just them who changed with their entrance—the Syraphem changed too. Her demeanor became fortified, and her emotions locked themselves away so quickly it gave Kar whiplash. She stood taller, and her face would betray nothing to them; it never did. Kar handed off the leather bag with Arioch’s coin to Emryn before heading toward the side of the room where Lúc and Tariq were sitting.

The Shifter jumped up when he saw them, snagged Kar’s hand, and threw her over his shoulder. She squeaked, fisting the fabric against his back, and couldn’t help the laughter bubbling up in her throat.

“Put me down!”

“Ask pretty.” Lúc hummed, squeezing her thigh.

“Put me down, asshole.”

He chuckled, dropping Kar onto unsteady legs, before twirling her, the dress she wore hugging her with the speed of his spin. “Shit, Kar.” His nose twitched. “Who the fuck are you wearing all over your face?”

Kar slapped his arm, swallowing the urge to wipe her hand over her mouth. She knew there wouldn’t be anything there; it was just that Gods damned nose.
